These shoes were made for walkin'
Every evening I have been accompanying my daughter, or husband, depending on who volunteers to walk the dog and have enjoyed mile-long walks. Sometimes, depending on the time we have available, we’ve even been going the long route along the park and lake for a walk that spans about 2.5 miles.
The exercise has felt great and I have come back sweaty — a sign that the walk was productive! However, I’ve been wanting more — something that will provide a workout at an increased heart rate.
I posted yesterday asking for feedback on Wii-based fitness games, and while waiting for responses, I am also considering alternatives. The idea of Zumba really intrigues me but I don’t know how to dance, feel very uncoordinated and can’t see making a fool out of myself for the sake of exercise.
I also previously mentioned the fact that I am a YMCA member and have access to a very nice facility just a few miles away. But, there’s the issue of child care.
I need to make the time to do something. I’m happy that I’ve managed to fit in the walking, but putting Sarah in the stroller makes that effort easy. And, I’m also happy with the weight loss I’ve recorded, but know how much more effective I could be if I were exercising more vigorously.

Hi Jennifer,
Congrats on reaching 20%!!
I know how you feel about wanting something more and I’m sorry I don’t have any info on the Wii. I’ve been considering the Wii as well to lose the last 30 or so pounds I’d like to lose.
Anyhow, if you’re looking for an additional workout to add to the mix I recommend checking out the first Biggest Loser workout on DVD. It has 4 workouts on the dvd and they’re about 20 minutes each. I would do the low intensity workout before hopping on the elliptical and I really liked it. The workouts are all done with Bob and they seemed to go quickly and I didn’t feel bored.
Just an idea I thought I’d pass on. I honestly didn’t like the Biggest Loser 2 workout as much as the first.
I know how you feel about the gym/daycare thing. Reading the reviews on Amazon might help you decide if that DVD is for you.
Good luck!
Check out this site: http://www.joycevedral.com. I’ve been working out to her videos off and on for years and I keep coming back to them. At one point, I’d worked out regularly to them for about 8 months and was regularly lifting 10, 12 and 15 pound weights, sometimes 20’s. I loved feeling strong. A lot of her videos are also aerobic, as well as strength training. I have almost all of her videos and rotate them for variety. I love love love Joyce Vedral!

Laura, I was able to find the Biggest Loser DVD at our public library and put a hold on it. It came in yesterday and I did the warmup and first workout this morning. I didn’t realize that it called for weights and didn’t have any handy before the video started. So, for my first run-through I did all of the exercises without the weights. By the end of the 25 minutes I was plenty tired as it was, so I can imagine that with weights I would have felt a whole lot more of the burn! But, it was very good and went by fairly quickly — what you like in a workout!
I only have the DVD for a week, so I’ll have to make sure that tomorrow morning I have my weights ready. Bob suggested that a newbie follow the initial routine for two weeks before adding on the 2nd workout, so I’ll probably have to put it on my Christmas list if I am going to experience more than what I already did.
Hollycat — I haven’t found any Joyce Vedral videos yet, but I am keeping my eyes open.
